A four-run first inning gave Polk State all the runs it needed tonight as the Eagles beat the University of Tampa JV 5-2.
Tampa scored twice in the second inning without benefit of a hit. The Spartans got their two runs on three walks, a fielder's choice, a sacrifice bunt, and a hit batter.
The Eagles (13-7, No. 8 in the FCSAA Coaches' Poll) begin Suncoast Conference action tomorrow at 6 p.m. at St. Petersburg State College.
Head Coach Al Corbeil says that while the Eagles have improved recently, they'll have to get even better as they face conference foes.
"I feel like we're whole lot better than we were two or three weeks ago," he said. "We've been putting together some better at-bats, although we still need to get a lot better because we'll see better arms more consistently.
"We played good defense again tonight, and for the most part threw strikes and had some big hits, so we'll try to keep it going as we go into conference play."
