Trailing 3-0 after three innings, Polk State rallied for a 5-4 win over Lake-Sumter State College on Opening Day at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven.

The Eagles started their comeback in the bottom of the fourth when Yeison Gomez doubled and Isaiah Cullum blasted a two-run home run to center field, cutting the lead to 3-2.

The Lakehawks scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, giving them a 4-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the inning, Cole Warken drew a leadoff walk, Zach Diewert singled, and Kaylor Kulina bunted for a hit to load the bases. Warken then scored when Brandon Gali hit into a double play, cutting the lead to 4-3.

Zach Biermann was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the eight. When Raudy Martinez followed with a walk, the Eagles sent in Tommy Gamble as a pinch runner for Biermann at second base.

Cullum then smashed a double to the base of the fence in center field, scoring Gamble with the tying run. Martinez was thrown out at the plate, and Cullum took third on the throw.

Cullum then hustled home with the winning run on an errant pickoff throw to third.

"I'm glad we were able to pull this one out," said Head Coach Al Corbeil.

"Winning games late seems to happen to us a lot here. Our bullpen did a really good job. They threw up a bunch of zeros and kept us in the game, and then we finally got a chance to put some runs on the board and get it done."

Starting pitcher Tommy Romero worked three innings, allowing three runs and four hits, walking two and striking out three.

Johnnie Schneider followed with three innings of hitless and scoreless relief. He walked one and struck out three.

Justin Tworek (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief. He gave up no hits or walks and struck out three.

Jacob Kelley picked up the save, retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth.

Cullum finished with 3 RBI.

Kulina had a 4-for-4 night with two triples.

Biermann went 2-for-three, while Warken had a run and a walk, and Gomez scored a run.

The Eagles (1-0, No. 7 FCSAA) face Pasco-Hernando State College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Winter Haven.
