Two former Polk State Eagles have helped the University of North Florida Osprey basketball team make the NCAA tournament for the first time.
Assistant Coach Stephen Perkins came to UNF in 2013 following four years on the coaching staff at Polk State. He served three seasons as assistant coach and was promoted to associate head coach his final year.
Perkins helped the Eagles make three state tournament appearances and win two Suncoast Conference Championships and one Suncoast Conference tournament title.
Ismaila Dauda, a 6-9 center from Kano, Nigeria, played for the Eagles from 2011 to 2013. He spent a season at Cleveland State before moving to UNF. Although he was ineligible to play this season due to NCAA transfer requirements, he practiced with the Ospreys every day.
At Polk State, Dauda was named to the First Team All Conference as a sophomore and Second Team All Conference as a freshman. He helped lead the Eagles to the Suncoast Conference championship in 2013.
"I am very excited for both Steve and Ismaila," said Matt Furjanic, Polk State's head basketball coach. Knowing that two former members of our Eagle basketball family will participate in the NCAA tournament is very exciting. "
UNF, which plays in the Atlantic Sun Conference, finished the season 23-11.
