Kathryn Huapaya's goal in double overtime gave Polk State soccer a 3-2 victory over Broward College today in Lakeland.

It was the first win of the season for the Eagles.

The Seahawks got on the board first, scoring in the 16th minute, and the first half ended with Polk State trailing 1-0.

At halftime, Head Coach Steve Linamen encouraged the team to "focus on the things that we work on every day in practice and to put them into play."

In the second half, Leah Neck's goal in the 52nd minute tied the score at 1.

After a Broward goal in the 62nd minute gave the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage, Huapaya scored on a penalty kick in the 71st minute, and the second half ended 2-2.

Neither team scored in the first overtime, and Huapaya booted her game-winner in the 116th minute.

"It feels good to win," said Linamen.

"We've continued to make progress every game. We saw much better ball movement today, and we're going in the right direction.

"We didn't want to go into two overtimes, but for us to keep our heads in the game and to be composed enough to finish it off, that's a good way to go, especially when it's the first regional game.

The Eagles took 10 shots on goal, and Maddy Miller and Dyaniz Serrano combined to make 12 goalkeeper saves.

Broward also had 10 shots on goal, with seven keeper saves.

The Eagles (1-0-1) return to action Sunday, Sept. 18, when they face Andrew College on Polk State's Lakeland Campus.
