No. 6 Polk State got off to a good start today, beating No. 11 San Jacinto-Central 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-15) in the first round of the NJCAA Division I Volleyball National Championship tournament in Casper, Wyo.
The Eagles advance to play No. 3 Northwest today at 5:30 p.m. Mountain Time.
"We had a rough start in the first set, but we called a time out, talked about it, and got back out there.
"I think the players want it. To beat us, people are going to have to play. With the way that we practiced last week, and the chemistry we have on this team, the kids are doing a good job right now."
Yue Wu led the Eagles' attack with 16 kills, 18 digs, a pair of aces, and three assists.
Elisabeth Piroli recorded 33 assists along with eight digs, two blocks, and one kill.
Suheily Colon made six kills and five blocks.
Zoemy Barreto contributed nine kills, nine digs, two assists, two blocks, and an ace.
Dayanna Teixeira finished with seven kills, five digs, one block, and an assist.
Laina Blanton had three kills and one block.
Keisha Santana made 14 digs, a pair of aces, and two assists.
Madison Wildey added an ace.
